Webcam Setup Guide
Would likely work well: USB webcams
Rollsight works with many camera solutions. USB webcams in our "Would likely work well" tier include Logitech C920, C922x, Razer Kiyo Pro, Elgato Facecam, and Anker PowerConf C200. For a tested, top recommendation, see the IPEVO V4K on our Setups page.
Prerequisites
- USB camera that matches our specs (1080p, low-light)
- Webcam mount or stand
- Dice tray or rolling surface
- Rollsight software installed
- USB port available on your computer
Step 1: Choose Your Webcam
USB cameras that match the specs we need (1080p, low-light) are currently supported. Popular models that work well:
Budget-Friendly
- • Logitech C920 HD Pro: 1080p, HD light correction
- • Logitech C922x Pro Stream: 1080p, auto light correction
- • Anker PowerConf C200: 2K sensor, good low light
Premium / Streaming
- • Razer Kiyo Pro: 1080p/60fps, HDR, excellent low-light
- • Elgato Facecam: 1080p/60fps, great for streaming
- • Better low-light = better dice recognition
Step 2: Mount Your Webcam
Position your webcam above your dice tray. Options include:
- Monitor mount: Clip webcam to top of monitor (if close enough to tray)
- Desk stand: Place webcam on desk stand positioned above tray
- Tripod: Use tripod with webcam mount for flexible positioning
- Adjustable arm: Clamp-mounted arm for precise positioning
- DIY mount: Books, boxes, or custom solutions
Important: Webcam should look straight down at dice tray. Angle should be as close to 90 degrees as possible for best recognition.
Tray not attached to the mount? If your tray sits separately from the webcam stand, a little double-sided tape (or similar) under the tray can hold it in position so you don't have to constantly re-adjust it.
Tray surface (important for Rollsight): Rollsight works best with a black or dark tray. It's trained and tuned for dark backgrounds; light or colored trays can cause missed dice or false positives. If Rollsight struggles on your current tray, line it with black self-adhesive felt cut to size—e.g. Caydo black self-adhesive felt sheets (Amazon). This often fixes recognition issues.
Dice readability: Clear or translucent dice are harder to read; dice similar in color to the tray (e.g. dark on black) are also tougher. Dice with unusual fonts, symbols, or non-standard pips are fine once you train them—Rollsight learns from your examples.
Step 3: Connect and Test
- Connect webcam to USB port on your computer
- Wait for system to recognize the device (may install drivers automatically)
- Test webcam in your system's camera app or video call software
- Verify image quality and adjust position if needed
- Ensure entire dice tray is visible in frame
Step 4: Configure in Rollsight
- Launch Rollsight software
- Go to Settings → Camera
- Select your webcam from the camera list
- You should see the webcam feed in the vision pane
- Verify dice tray is clearly visible
Step 5: Calibration
Rollsight gives you several calibration options to get the best recognition from your webcam:
Capture area mask
In Settings → Camera you can set the capture area mask—the region of the image Rollsight uses for dice recognition. This lets you match different camera resolutions and dice tray shapes (rectangular, round, etc.) and ignore the rest of the frame. Very helpful when your webcam sees more than just the tray.
Camera settings
- Focus: Camera menu → Calibrate Focus (if webcam supports it)
- Zoom: Frame the dice tray (hardware or digital zoom)
- Rotation: Fine-tune in Camera menu if dice appear tilted
- Exposure: Adjust in system camera settings if image is too bright/dark
Rollsight settings
- Background calibration: Settings → Calibrate Background for optimal recognition
- Lighting Boost: Enable if image is too dark
- Camera Normalization: Enable for consistent results across different cameras
Step 6: Streaming Setup (Optional)
Your webcam works well for streaming. It's already set up as a video source:
- Open OBS, Streamlabs, or your streaming software
- Add Video Capture Device source
- Select your webcam from device list
- Position and resize in your streaming scene
- Your viewers can watch your dice rolls live!
See our streaming guides for detailed setup.
Tips for Best Results
- Good lighting: Webcams need adequate light for best quality
- Stable mount: Prevent camera shake for consistent recognition
- Proper distance: 8-16 inches above tray is ideal
- Clean lens: Wipe webcam lens regularly
- USB 3.0: Use USB 3.0 port if available for better performance
- Close other apps: Free up resources for camera
Troubleshooting
Webcam not detected
- Check USB connection
- Try different USB port
- Install webcam drivers from manufacturer
- Check if webcam works in other applications
- Restart computer if needed
Poor image quality
- Improve lighting over dice tray
- Clean webcam lens
- Adjust webcam position and angle
- Check webcam settings in system preferences
- Try different resolution settings
Laggy or stuttering video
- Use USB 3.0 port if available
- Close other applications using camera
- Lower resolution if webcam supports it
- Check system resources (CPU, memory)
- Try different USB cable
Next Steps
